Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to invite Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing for an official visit to Malaysia, aiming to negotiate a resolution to the ongoing issue of Myanmar refugees residing in the country. This invitation underscores Malaysia's commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to the refugee crisis that has posed significant challenges.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar conveyed this initiative to the Home Ministry and Cabinet two weeks ago, seeking Myanmar's agreement to gradually repatriate its citizens who are currently refugees in Malaysia. Anwar emphasized the importance of building friendly relations and economic ties with Myanmar, contingent upon the country's acceptance of its refugees back. While the immediate repatriation of all 200,000 refugees is not feasible, a gradual process is proposed, with Malaysia offering assistance in the resolution.
Anwar highlighted that negotiations with Myanmar's leadership are crucial, as the repatriation process cannot succeed without Myanmar's cooperation. Previous discussions in Bangkok and Beijing addressed humanitarian and security concerns, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive solution to the refugee situation. In Bangkok, Anwar stressed Malaysia's stance that violence against refugees must cease, as the ramifications extend to Malaysia.
The Prime Minister stipulated that the repatriation must ensure the safety of returning refugees and provide access to necessary facilities, such as medical care. He reported that Myanmar accepted these conditions during negotiations. Anwar reiterated Malaysia's willingness to maintain positive relations with Myanmar, while urging them to facilitate the repatriation of their citizens.
As a result of the negotiations, Myanmar agreed to accept 5,000 refugees, with plans to repatriate an additional 1,500 within the coming weeks. To support this effort, the Malaysian government is prepared to cover certain costs associated with the repatriation, deeming it more practical than long-term support.
Anwar acknowledged the concerns of local communities regarding the presence of Myanmar refugees, particularly in instances of legal violations and unauthorized gatherings. He assured that while law enforcement will address such incidents, it is imperative to balance it with humanitarian considerations for those facing hardships.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Malaysia's goal is to prevent the indefinite stay of Myanmar refugees and to achieve a negotiated solution that ensures safe and orderly repatriation.
