Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged the current generation to appreciate the country's history of struggle and understand the meaning of independence that has been achieved through the sacrifices of previous generations. Speaking at the launch of the 2026 National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Campaign (MPBKKJG 2026) here, Anwar emphasized the importance of remembering the blood, sweat, and tears of past independence fighters as a lesson for Malaysians to appreciate the comforts they enjoy today.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar articulated the significance of understanding independence not just as a historical event but as a living tradition that should instill pride and unity among Malaysians. Through revisiting history, flying the national flag, and working towards a brighter future, he believes the younger generation can better grasp the essence of independence. Anwar stressed the importance of collective effort in achieving independence, urging children to remember the sacrifices made.
Also present at the event were Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, and Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. Anwar reminded Malaysians of all races to resist attempts that could undermine the unity that has been the core of the country's strength. He highlighted Malaysia's strength as a nation built on respect for ethnic diversity, underscoring the importance of maintaining unity among Malays, Chinese, Indians, Dayaks, and Kadazans.
The Prime Minister called for a renewed embrace of the independence motto "Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu," introduced by Tunku Abdul Rahman Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of independent Malaya and Malaysia. Anwar emphasized that unity in diversity is foundational to enhancing the nation's quality and strength. He reiterated that working together and uniting, despite differences, is a principle that remains logical and essential today.
During the event, Anwar handed over a 6-by-12-foot Jalur Gemilang flag to a nine-member Royal Malaysian Navy team for the flag-raising ceremony, marking the symbolic launch of the campaign. The event, attended by approximately 3,000 guests, featured the singing of the national anthem, Negaraku, the recitation of the Rukun Negara pledge, and a medley of patriotic songs. The Prime Minister also engaged with guests while waving the Jalur Gemilang, fostering a spirit of national pride.
The event also saw the launch of the 2026 National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM 2026) theme song, titled "Aku Berjanji," written and performed by Faizal Tahir, further enhancing the celebratory and unifying atmosphere of the occasion.
