Kuala lumpur: Rail services operated by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana) have shown a marked improvement in reliability over the past three years, with the number of annual service disruptions decreasing from 252 cases in 2022 to just 31 cases in 2025. Transport Minister Anthony Loke highlighted this achievement during a press conference at Menara Prasarana, where the Prasarana Performance Report 2025 and the 2026 Plan were presented.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the improvement was assessed using the Mean Kilometre Between Failures (MKBF) indicator. The indicator revealed that in 2025, one disruption occurred for every 790,000 kilometres of operation, compared to 60,000 kilometres in 2022. Loke attributed this success to Prasarana's focus on maintenance, system repairs, and the implementation of predictive maintenance over the past three years.
Despite the overall improvement, the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line reported 16 disruptions in 2025, down from 26 cases in 2024. Loke explained that disruptions occur when a train remains stationary at a station for more than five minutes, affecting operations at subsequent stations, particularly during peak hours.
Loke identified multiple factors causing rail service disruptions, including system and operational issues, and external elements like cable theft and adverse weather. He noted that cable theft impacts the signalling system, causing driverless trains like the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Kelana Jaya LRT Line to halt for safety reasons.
To address these issues, Prasarana is upgrading the system and communication for the Kelana Jaya LRT Line, with the second phase expected to finish by year's end, potentially enhancing the line's performance. On asset expansion, Loke announced that 26 new train sets for the Kelana Jaya LRT Line have been awarded to the ZELC-CRM-CLM Consortium (CRRC), with three additional sets allocated for monorail services. These new trains will undergo testing and safety certification over three years before becoming operational.
Additionally, 50 existing train sets will undergo a comprehensive overhaul after 15 years of service. Prasarana Group president and CEO, Amir Hamdan, reported a record 1.63 million daily passenger journeys in the Klang Valley and Penang, the highest in the agency's history. The average daily passenger journeys in 2025 increased by 11 percent to 1.31 million from 1.18 million the previous year, reflecting growing reliability in rail and bus operations.
Amir also noted improvements in the level of service (LOS) for Rapid Bus, which increased to 1,355 units from 1,165 the previous year, alongside enhanced Rapid On-Demand (ROD) services. Modernisation of the bus fleet continues with the delivery of 310 new diesel buses, expected to be completed by February.
