Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to demonstrate their patriotic spirit by flying the Jalur Gemilang in conjunction with the National Day celebrations on August 31. He emphasized that raising the Jalur Gemilang is a way of honoring the national symbol and signifies unity among all races and ages, regardless of political affiliation. Anwar expressed hope that private companies, offices, and business centers will continue flying the Jalur Gemilang until Malaysia Day on September 16.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar made these remarks during his speech at the opening of the East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) Section One at the Ampang Toll Plaza. The event was attended by notable figures, including Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
During a session with reporters after the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of using the independence celebration as a chance to strengthen unity among the people. He urged citizens to seize the opportunity to empower unity, consensus, and teamwork, and cautioned against questioning loyalty to the country.
Addressing questions about the Urban Renewal Bill, which faced a postponed debate after its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar clarified that the bill aims to redevelop areas to provide more comfortable housing for the poor. He stressed that the bill is not intended to infringe on Malay rights but to improve living conditions for those in dilapidated housing. Anwar dismissed concerns about any racial takeover, asserting that the development is meant to benefit all races, including the M40, B40, and poor groups.
Anwar emphasized the importance of understanding the real-life challenges faced by many families, pointing out that some large families live in small flats, and in some cases, two families share a single unit. He urged elected representatives to personally visit these communities to gain a better understanding of the hardships faced by the people.
