Priority for New Bridge Construction in Jalan Permatang Pauh Amid Safety Concerns

George Town: The proposal to build a new bridge to replace the Kampung Bertam Bridge in Jalan Permatang Pauh, Seberang Perai Tengah in Penang will be given priority, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. He stated that an inspection by the Public Works Department (JKR) Forensic Unit in the middle of last year revealed the existing bridge was in a condition that was not suitable for long-term use.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nanta emphasized the importance of addressing this issue promptly, committing to prioritize the construction of the new bridge in upcoming planning and allocation processes. He highlighted the ministry's commitment to public safety, sharing his thoughts on Facebook following a survey of the Kampung Bertam Bridge, located near the Masjid Papan landmark.

Temporary repairs were undertaken at the end of last year, with the installation of riprap costing RM90,000 to mitigate the risk of structural failure. Nanta further explained that JKR has plans for additional temporary repair measures, including polyurethane injection, a technique for waterproofing and sealing, to maintain the bridge's usability without compromising safety.

He also mentioned that the Seberang Perai Tengah JKR, along with the federal road concessionaire, are actively monitoring the bridge's condition to ensure public safety.
