Proposed Cybercrime Force Similar To Interpol To Strengthen Efforts To Eradicate Digital Piracy

Kuala Lumpur: The proposal to establish a cybercrime team similar to Interpol to strengthen cooperation and enforcement at the regional level is seen as important to combat digital piracy.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed support for the establishment of such a team, emphasizing that digital piracy has evolved beyond mere content or intellectual property theft. He noted that it now poses a significant threat capable of undermining the nation's innovation and creative sectors.

"I also support the establishment of a cybercrime team similar to Interpol to strengthen cooperation and enforcement at the regional level," Ahmad Zahid stated in a Facebook post. He highlighted the necessity of close collaboration among the government, industry, and society to ensure the complete eradication of digital piracy.

Further, Ahmad Zahid mentioned that the MADANI Government is committed to intensifying efforts against digital piracy through legislative amendments, such as updates to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which have played a role in addressing the issue effectively.

He also called on the public to join in efforts to protect intellectual property rights and to foster the growth of the creative industry, aiming for a future that is innovative and competitive.
