Johor bahru: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has named Amir Syafiq Ameer Soekre as its sole candidate for the Johor state election, where he will contest the Skudai state seat. PSM deputy chairperson S. Arutchelvan announced the decision, emphasizing the strategic focus on a single constituency due to the high cost of elections and the desire to concentrate efforts where the party can potentially make a significant impact.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the choice of Skudai as the battleground aligns with PSM's agenda of addressing urban issues related to workers and housing, reflecting the party's commitment to championing the concerns of the people. Arutchelvan elaborated on the decision, noting that larger parties typically have more resources, prompting PSM to target a strategic constituency for maximum impact.
He further explained that the decision to contest only one seat is part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening the progressive bloc and evaluating public acceptance of the political alternative offered by PSM. This move is seen as a step towards building a more robust political presence in the future.
Amir Syafiq, aged 40, who currently serves as the PSM Johor secretary, is also a dedicated workers' rights activist. He brings to the table 15 years of experience in sales and marketing and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in International Business Management from Teesside University.
