Kuala lumpur: Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) will announce the acquisition of broadcasting rights for several more world-class sporting events following the successful free-to-air coverage of the entire 2026 FIFA World Cup, said Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, broadcasting director-general Ashwad Ismail has informed that RTM would be airing several more tournaments, which will be announced later. This information was shared with reporters after the Unity Merdeka x RTM World Cup 2026 programme at Dataran Merdeka earlier today.

The MADANI Government spokesman mentioned that the Communications Ministry plans to obtain the full viewership figures for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final before conducting a comprehensive assessment of the tournament's broadcast performance. Initial technical issues were identified and resolved successfully.

Fahmi Fadzil highlighted the potential for exploring new technologies, including the ability to watch television on smartphones, which he believes will be beneficial for Malaysians. He expressed optimism about the opportunities this technology presents, saying it could enhance accessibility across the nation.

Meanwhile, Ashwad Ismail stated that the Broadcasting Department or RTM aims to strengthen strategic partnerships with local media organisations. This approach seeks to ensure public access to quality content, including major sporting events, by focusing on collaboration rather than competition for broadcasting rights.

Ashwad emphasized that the goal is to provide the best content to the people and not to view broadcasting rights as a form of competition. He reiterated that the collaborative approach would extend beyond World Cup broadcasts to include other major events in the future, benefiting audiences nationwide.
