Sarawak: Sarawak can leverage on its rich resources, cultural diversity and political stability to position itself to become a sub-national model for governance in the global network, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He stated that these strengths enable Sarawak to play an active role in global governance and sustainable development.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Awang Tengah emphasized Sarawak's alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 16, which focuses on justice, peace, and strong institutions. He highlighted Sarawak's proactive approach to addressing global challenges such as corruption, environmental crises, and social inequality through international cooperation networks.
He further noted Sarawak's commitment to the climate change agenda, particularly through renewable energy initiatives, green hydrogen, and the preservation of tropical forests. Awang Tengah stated that these efforts not only support the Paris Agreement on Climate Change but also demonstrate Sarawak's dedication to a green economy and sustainable development.
Integrity and good governance are central to Sarawak's Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, forming the foundation for the state's long-term growth and transformation agenda, according to Awang Tengah. He added that Sarawak is institutionalizing integrity across its administration through various measures, including the Sarawak Integrity dan Ombudsman Unit (UNIONS), appointment of Certified Integrity Officers (CeIO), implementation of the Ombudsman Ordinance, and e-procurement systems.
Awang Tengah highlighted that Sarawak remains the only state in Malaysia with legislation related to the Ombudsman through the Sarawak Ombudsman Ordinance 2023. This legislation marks a historic step in providing an independent mechanism for public accountability and oversight. He concluded by stating that Sarawak is committed to ensuring transparent and fair governance, sending a clear message to the people, investors, and the international community.
