Sarawak: Sarawak has embarked on an extensive bridge construction initiative worth RM7.316 billion, aiming to significantly improve transportation links and accessibility across the state. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, announced the large-scale programme, which consists of 143 projects. This initiative underscores the state government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the programme includes 21 major bridges valued at RM6.92 billion and the rural bridge transformation programme (RBTP), which allocates RM396 million for 122 rural bridge projects. The RBTP is designed to replace old, damaged wooden bridges with safe, modern reinforced concrete structures and to build new links in rural areas. Uggah highlighted these developments during his address at the Sarawak State Assembly sitting.
Uggah further mentioned that the Public Work Department has completed eight major bridges, including the Muara Lassa Bridge, Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge, Batang Saribas Bridge, and Datuk Amar Juma'ani Bridge. In addition to the completed projects, the remaining works on the major bridges are progressing well. Currently, 10 bridges are under construction, with nine of them expected to be completed next year.
