Sarawak Must Explore New Markets Beyond Traditional Partners – Awang Tengah

Kuching: Sarawak must explore new markets such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America to diversify beyond its traditional trade partners, stated the state's Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. He emphasized that this strategy would create new opportunities and mitigate the risks linked to heavy reliance on specific markets.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Deputy Premier highlighted the necessity of strengthening collaborations with industrial players, trade promotional agencies, and global distributors. He mentioned that these strategic partnerships would grant access to retail markets, boost brand visibility, and establish a broader global presence for Sarawak brands. Awang Tengah delivered these remarks during the launch of Sarawak Export Day 2025.

Awang Tengah, who also serves as the Sarawak Minister of International Trade, Industry, and Investment, underscored the importance of technology in enabling businesses to compete on a global scale. He urged companies to adopt digital platforms, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven insights, and blockchain technology to improve competitiveness, transparency, and their ability to connect with global buyers.

He noted that modern global buyers prioritize sustainability alongside price and quality. This trend is driven by shifting consumer behavior, pushing exporters to meet rigorous international standards that incorporate sustainable practices.

Awang Tengah further stated that his ministry collaborates closely with exporters to navigate regulatory changes, engage in trade missions, and gain international visibility. He also mentioned the strategic significance of Sarawak's trade offices in Singapore, Brunei, and the upcoming office in Pontianak, Indonesia, as essential entry points for Sarawak-made products and services to penetrate and expand in regional and international markets.
