Kuching: More trees should be planted in cities across Sarawak to help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in urban areas, says Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He emphasized the importance of utilizing Sarawak's rich forest resources for urban landscaping to combat pollution.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari highlighted that while many regions globally have to import trees for urban greenery, Sarawak is fortunate to possess an abundance of natural forests that can be tapped for this purpose. He stated, "In other places, they import trees. But for us, we have many trees in our forests that can be replanted within our cities. Once our cities become greener, these trees help absorb carbon through photosynthesis providing us with fresh air."
He further explained the need for city planning to achieve a balance between carbon emissions and oxygen production, suggesting that urban areas should be designed to support this equilibrium. Additionally, he pointed out the importance of prioritizing green recreational facilities and ensuring an efficient drainage system in city planning. These measures were discussed during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 11th International Conference on Low Carbon Asia (ICLCA).
