Sarawak Premier Announces Ambitious Plans for Space Agency and AirBorneo

Kuching: Sarawak is planning to establish its own space agency, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He stated that the agency will serve as the main coordinating entity with roles in planning, forging partnerships, and developing local capabilities.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Sarawak Aerospace Advisory Council (SAAC) has been formed to offer strategic direction and comprehensive guidance in advancing Sarawak's aerospace sector, aligning with current global industry standards. Abang Johari also revealed that Sarawak aims to launch its first nanosatellite by 2030 using CubeSat-based technology, which involves small satellites for real-time data and earth observation.

Sarawak is expected to develop its own satellite system to acquire earth imagery, geolocation data, and strategic information for planning, environmental monitoring, and resource management. In addition, Abang Johari discussed the development of AirBorneo, which is being executed in phases. The first phase focuses on consolidating public service obligation operations to serve rural routes within Sabah and Sarawak.

In the second phase, AirBorneo plans to expand into strategic domestic and regional commercial routes based on market demand and aircraft availability. Initial jet operations are planned to begin from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Jakarta, and Singapore by July 2026. The vision is to connect Sarawak to major towns and cities of Borneo, enhancing accessibility for residents, investors, and tourists, while creating new opportunities for trade, investment, and tourism.
