Sarawak Strengthens Role in Renewable Energy with New Waste Management Law

Tokyo: Sarawak remains a growing attraction for global investors, particularly in the renewable energy sector, as the state intensifies efforts to transition into a regional renewable-energy 'powerhouse'. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state's diverse low-carbon resources, including hydropower, biomass, natural gas, and hydrogen, position Sarawak as a significant player in the emerging 'new economy,' where clean and sustainable energy solutions are increasingly prioritized.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sarawak's commitment to renewable energy advancement was further demonstrated by the passage of the Sustainable Resources and Wastes Management Bill 2025 at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly. The legislation, the first of its kind in Malaysia, focuses on the selection and management of waste to generate energy, marking a significant step in transforming waste into an economic resource. This new law, aimed at modernizing waste-recovery practices, supports Sarawak's ambition to reinforce its position at the forefront of clean-energy initiatives.

The Japan-Sarawak Renewable Energy Investment Forum, organized by Yamada Consulting and Spire and supported by the Sarawak Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, served as the backdrop for Abang Johari's remarks. Also present at the event was Go Sakano, managing director of ASEAN and India Yamada Consulting and Spire Singapore Pte Ltd. Abang Johari expressed optimism about potential partnerships with Japanese companies, particularly those offering advanced technologies, as Sarawak continues to attract investors aligned with its vision for a sustainable future.

The Bill, tabled by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, received majority support and is seen as a pivotal development in strengthening the state's governance in waste management. Abang Johari reiterated Sarawak's readiness to collaborate, stating, 'You have your company, the bank supports you, and we've got the resources. Combined, we become a major player in energy in this part of the world.'
