Second Test To Confirm Excess Biotoxins In Port Dickson Shellfish

Port dickson: The Negeri Sembilan Fisheries Department will conduct a second sampling of mussels and shellfish in the waters off Port Dickson tomorrow, following the detection of biotoxin readings above the safe limit in the first sample. Its director, Kasim Tawe, announced plans for further testing after initial laboratory results from the Kuala Lumpur Fisheries Biosecurity Centre showed concerning levels of biotoxins.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the test results from last week revealed biotoxin readings exceeding 800 parts per billion. Such levels render the seafood unsafe for consumption due to potential health risks. "We will take the second sample tomorrow morning before an official ban can be issued. The laboratory results are expected this Thursday or Friday," Kasim Tawe stated.

In response to the findings, the agency has advised fishermen in the waters off Port Dickson to refrain from collecting, harvesting, or gathering shellfish, including mussels, until further notice. Prior to this, the Telok Kemang Area Fishermen's Association reported a possible algal bloom in the waters off Pasir Panjang, which could be linked to the increased biotoxin levels.
