Iskandar puteri: The Johor state government has not received any reports from Petronas Gas Berhad regarding damage to its facilities following a minor earthquake in Segamat yesterday morning.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh stated that the government is waiting for comprehensive reports from Petronas and other relevant agencies to ensure the safety of gas infrastructure and public facilities. Mohamad Fazli acknowledged residents' concerns about underground gas pipelines but emphasized that, up to now, Petronas has not reported any damage or ground movement.
He mentioned that they are still waiting for detailed findings from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to determine if any preventive measures are necessary. This statement was made during the launch of the JBC Pothole Pro at the Johor State Road Maintenance Innovation event in Iskandar Puteri.
Mohamad Fazli noted that preliminary inspections of state government assets, including roads and buildings managed by the Public Works Department and Drainage and Irrigation Department, as well as dams in the affected regions, have so far shown no structural damage. While minor cracks have been observed, the structures remain intact. Reports from schools, hospitals, clinics, and other facilities are still pending before any further action is taken.
He explained that the state government is also waiting for expert evaluations from the Department of Minerals and Geoscience and MetMalaysia, as they do not currently have specialised earthquake monitoring equipment. The available technology is limited to monitoring slopes.
Mohamad Fazli added that any necessary remedial action would be determined upon receipt of full reports. MetMalaysia confirmed that a minor earthquake measuring 3.2 magnitude struck Segamat at 8.59 am yesterday, with tremors felt in parts of Johor and southern Pahang. Prior to this, on August 24, MetMalaysia recorded two other minor earthquakes in the region.
