Selangor: Selangor FC began their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League 2 (ACL2) campaign on a losing note when they went down 4-2 to Bangkok United at the Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium here today.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the visitors got off to a strong start, with Ilias Alhaft getting the ball rolling in the 11th minute before Muhseh Saleh doubled their lead four minutes later. Selangor, to their credit, managed to pull a goal back in the 23rd minute when Chrigor Moraes neatly slotted home a cross from Quentin Cheng. However, their joy was short-lived as Bangkok United restored their two-goal lead through Ilias just a minute later.
Further challenges arose for Selangor when Harith Haiqal was sent off in the 39th minute for a foul on Bangkok United's Seia Kunori, reducing the team to 10 men. Despite being a player down, Selangor returned after the break with determination to narrow the gap. Their efforts were rewarded when substitute Aliff Izwan netted their second goal in the 73rd minute.
However, any hopes of a Selangor comeback were dashed when Philippe Maia secured Bangkok United's victory by scoring the fourth goal in the 84th minute.
