Selangor Government to Discuss Measures on Haze and El Nino Impact

Selangor:Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari is scheduled to meet with the State Education Department (JPNS) to discuss measures related to the current haze situation affecting the state.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the meeting will focus on necessary actions, including school operations, based on air quality developments and reports from the Malaysian Meteorological Department and the Department of Environment. Amirudin mentioned that contingency plans are ready, such as closing schools if the Air Pollutant Index (API) reaches 200. The state is also preparing to assist special education schools and is closely monitoring the situation as the school session ends in November before the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.

The meeting will ensure that follow-up measures align with standard operating procedures if air quality worsens. Coordination with technical agencies will continue to prioritize public safety and health. Amirudin also highlighted concerns about the upcoming period from February to April next year, as the Super El Nino phenomenon is forecasted to persist, potentially bringing hot weather and reduced rainfall.

In addition, Amirudin assured that Selangor's raw water supply is stable, with reserves sufficient to meet domestic needs for three to nine months, depending on weather conditions. This is in anticipation of the monsoon transition phase.

Earlier, at the Selangor International Trade Centre, Amirudin launched the Jelajah Sejahtera MADANI - SIKR 3.0 programme. This initiative, in collaboration with the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister's Department and Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad, aims to offer 12 months of insurance coverage to 250,000 heads of households from poor families registered in the eKasih system. The programme, with an allocation of RM20 million, also provides free health screenings to 500 households. It is designed to strengthen the social safety net and support the MADANI Government's goals for social stability and well-being.
