Selangor Prepares Over 1,000 Relief Centres for Potential Flood Evacuations

Kuala lumpur: The Selangor government has strategically prepared more than 1,000 temporary relief centres (PPS) to ensure the safety and welfare of residents potentially affected by floods, as announced by state executive councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Jamaliah spoke to reporters after visiting flood evacuees at the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Salak PPS, revealing that only about five percent of the centres are currently operational, with nine centres open in the Sepang district. The SK Kampung Baharu Lanjut PPS in Sepang has the highest occupancy, sheltering 297 people, while the SK Salak PPS is accommodating 182 individuals.

"Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari is deeply concerned and has instructed all executive councillors to evaluate the situation and address the needs of victims personally," Jamaliah stated. She emphasized that the state government has allocated funds to manage flood-related issues for this year and the next.

As of noon today, 33 PPS are active in Selangor, providing refuge to 4,433 evacuees from 1,227 families, based on information from the www.infobencanajkm website. The data shows 14 centres in Kuala Selangor, nine in Sepang, five in Kuala Langat, three in Sabak Bernam, and two in Klang.

Jamaliah assured that the centres would remain operational until it is entirely safe for evacuees to return home. The state government is focusing on flood mitigation projects as a long-term strategy, and it has encouraged MPs in affected areas to keep constituents informed about these proactive measures.

Standard operating procedures at all PPS are reportedly functioning efficiently, with necessary preparations in place to ensure smooth operations. Additionally, the Selangor government has mobilized over 300 logistical assets, including operational machinery and 200 boats, to be deployed throughout the flood season.
