Selangor to Adopt Solid Waste Management Act

Hanoi:Selangor Selangor is preparing to become the eighth state to adopt the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672), aiming to enhance the efficiency of its solid waste management and public cleansing services.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor reviewed the developments regarding the implementation of Act 672 during meetings with Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, and Selangor State Secretary Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin. These meetings, held on October 8 and 10, were intended to brief the Sultan following his visit to the Amager Bakke waste-to-energy plant in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Nga informed the Sultan that comprehensive efforts involving local authorities had been completed, and stakeholders were committed to finalizing the remaining processes. The tripartite agreement, once signed, will enable the appointment of relevant stakeholders, allowing Selangor to benefit from improved service standards in waste management and public cleansing.

Additional funding from the Federal Government through the Housing and Local Government Ministry will support this initiative. Similar arrangements have successfully been implemented in Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Pahang, Kedah, and Perlis since 2011.

Sultan Sharafuddin emphasized the importance of finalizing the tripartite agreement between the ministry, the Selangor state government, and local authorities swiftly, so the people can enjoy cleaner surroundings. His Royal Highness also stressed that service standards should not decline post-adoption and that efforts should be made to maintain or improve current levels.

The Sultan expressed hope that plans for waste-to-energy facilities in Selangor would proceed and be expedited with appropriate facilitation by the Federal Government. He believes that through cooperation and mutual understanding among stakeholders, a solution in the people's best interests can be achieved for a more advanced Selangor.
