Serian: Serian recorded an unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 153 as of 5 pm today, according to the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal. The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak reported a rise in ambient air quality levels since July 10.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, 11 areas showed moderate API readings ranging between 51 and 100. These areas include Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Samalaju, Lundu, Tebedu, and Lubok Antu.

NREB noted that the South-west Monsoon, which started on May 14 and is anticipated to last until September, is contributing to continual south-westerly winds across the country. This situation might lead to transboundary haze and further degrade air quality in Sarawak. The state may continue to experience haze if biomass burning outside its borders increases.

In response, NREB has activated its haze operations room, increased field patrols, revoked existing controlled burning permits, halted the issuance of new permits, and issued open burning prohibition notices to project developers.

The public is advised to stay hydrated, minimize outdoor activities, and wear face masks when outside, especially those in high-risk categories. Additionally, the public is reminded to avoid open burning during the dry season.
