Football association of malaysia: Presidential candidate Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar has outlined a manifesto centred on transparency, leadership reform, empowering affiliates and ensuring the financial sustainability of the country's football ecosystem.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Shahril stated his main priority was to strengthen transparency in FAM's management following issues highlighted in a recent Asian Football Confederation (AFC) audit. He noted concerns such as leakages and a lack of transparency, emphasizing that addressing these issues was his first priority, followed by introducing a new style of leadership. This was conveyed during an event marking a strategic partnership between AFFIN Group and Selangor FC at Menara AFFIN, TRX.
The Football Association of Selangor (FAS) deputy president highlighted the need to eliminate a culture of excessive deference to leadership, which he believes is crucial for FAM to meet the expectations of a new generation. Shahril, acknowledging his position as the underdog in the presidential race, also stressed the importance of a comprehensive review of the financial health of the football ecosystem, which includes the league, clubs, and affiliates.
Shahril's manifesto aims for changes to be implemented within three years, leveraging his nearly 30 years of experience, including a decade with Selangor FC, to drive change at FAM. He emphasized that difficult decisions would need to be made for the benefit of Malaysian football, and that clear leadership supported by a capable secretary-general or chief executive officer could ensure effective management of FAM.
FAM recently announced the confirmed candidates for its Executive Committee election for the remainder of the 2025-2029 term, scheduled during the association's second Extraordinary Congress of 2026 on Sept 17. Shahril is set to face Malaysian Football League (MFL) president Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan in a straight fight for the presidency. Additionally, contests will be held for two vice-president posts, as well as Executive Committee seats representing state football associations and clubs.
