Single Access Route and System Glitches Cause Rantau Panjang ICQS Congestion

Rantau Panjang:Congestion at the Rantau Panjang Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex (ICQS) results not from a lack of inspection counters but due to a single access route and occasional system disruptions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Rantau Panjang Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) commander, Siti Khadijah Hamzah, confirmed that all inspection counters are fully operational, especially during peak times, to ensure efficient processing of travelers. The complex operates with 12 counters, divided equally for entry and exit.

The main issue arises from all vehicles having to use a single route before they are directed into separate lanes, which can lead to slow traffic during busy periods. System disruptions further complicate the process, requiring officers to manually record information, thereby delaying inspections.

Congestion is a frequent complaint from users, particularly on weekends, public holidays, and festive seasons. The ageing infrastructure and limited road capacity exacerbate the problem as traveler numbers increase.

To address these challenges, AKPS plans to introduce advanced technology such as mobile scanners, autogates, and AI-based CCTV cameras to enhance border control and improve inspection efficiency. One AI-based CCTV is already in use, and further equipment is under consideration by AKPS headquarters.

Additionally, the cargo area€š¬…¡¬‚¬¦¡¬‚¬Å¡¬¦¡¬€š¬…¡¬‚¬¦¡¬‚¬Å¡¬¦¾¢s limited space is unsuitable for permanent scanning equipment, prompting proposals for mobile scanners. The IT and Digital Division director has assessed the need for these at the site.

AKPS is transitioning to the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) as the previous e-gate system contract has expired. Future plans include deploying drones to boost border surveillance, with technological advancements contingent on operational needs and funding availability.
