Yong Peng:A group of secondary school students had been eagerly anticipating a staycation to celebrate their birthdays in December, but tragedy struck when one of their own, Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, was found dead.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Irene Sofiya, a 16-year-old Form Four student, was discovered unconscious and covered in blood in the school hall before being pronounced dead at the scene. Her friend Rina, also 16, recounted their annual staycation plans and Irene Sofiya's excitement about the celebration.

Rina explained that they planned to visit a local coffee chain as a reward after exams. She became concerned when Irene Sofiya missed an extra class despite her motorcycle being on campus. After unsuccessful attempts to reach her friend by phone, Rina checked the victim's grandmother's house before returning to the school with friends to search for her.

Upon noticing the school hall door open, Rina felt uneasy and, upon checking inside with friends, discovered Irene Sofiya's legs near the stage. They immediately alerted the security guard and a teacher. Irene Sofiya was remembered by Rina and another friend, Syiha, as a kind, intelligent student involved in school activities.

A 16-year-old male student was detained to assist with the investigation and remanded for six days for further inquiries under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad reported that the suspect was arrested shortly after the police were alerted.
