Social Media Licensing Aims to Improve Justice for Cybercrime Victims, Says MCCA

KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of social media operating licenses, effective today, is anticipated to aid enforcement authorities in providing justice to cybercrime victims, according to Malaysian Cyber Consumer Association (MCCA) president Siraj Jalil. This move is expected to address the issue of identifying account owners involved in online crimes, which has previously hindered investigations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Siraj Jalil stated that the new licensing requirement would serve as a form of oversight, ensuring that victims of cybercrimes receive justice more efficiently. He emphasized that this development would contribute to user comfort and peace of mind by making the enforcement process more straightforward and ensuring better justice for cybercrime victims.

The licensing requirement is also expected to benefit parents of children who are active social media users. Siraj Jalil noted that while the requirement provides peace of mind, parents must remain vigilant about their children's social media safety and security, as it remains their primary responsibility.

In a related development, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced that four major internet messaging and social media service providers have taken steps towards regulatory compliance by applying for licenses to operate in Malaysia.
