Solar Energy A Major Alternative For Power Generation Amid West Asia Conflict: Citizens International

Kuala lumpur: Solar energy has become an important electricity generation alternative to replace oil, gas, and coal which are in short supply due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, according to non-governmental organisation (NGO) Citizens International. Its executive director, Imran Muhammad Rasid, said solar energy would reduce the dependence on fossil fuels for electricity generation, while at the same time conserving these resources.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Imran emphasized the need for Malaysia to consider more sustainable energy sources, particularly solar, in light of the challenging geopolitical situation. He stressed the importance of reassessing energy generation options to mitigate the rising import costs of coal, which could impact electricity prices.

Citizens International, dedicated to peaceful coexistence and global cooperation, highlighted Cuba's increased solar energy production amid oil import restrictions caused by the geopolitical conflict. Imran commended the Malaysian government's temporary adjustment of the Budi MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) quota as a strategic measure to manage subsidy pressure due to global oil price hikes.

Imran advocated for restructuring fuel subsidies to better target those in need, acknowledging the variation in fuel consumption across income levels. He called for targeted protection for lower-income groups, who typically consume less fuel.

He further suggested a comprehensive assessment to identify sectors most impacted by the crisis, urging the government to provide necessary support. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of reducing dependency on food imports by enhancing domestic production capacity to ensure food security.
