South Africa Seeks Enhanced Trade and Investment Ties with ASEAN

Kuala lumpur: South Africa is actively seeking to bolster its trade and investment relationships with the ASEAN region, according to President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa. ASEAN continues to be a significant market for the African nation, and South Africa is eager to engage in knowledge exchange with ASEAN countries to advance crucial sectors like technology and infrastructure.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, President Ramaphosa emphasized the mutual benefits of increased cooperation with ASEAN during a panel session titled 'Leader Fireside Chat.' The session was moderated by Mak Joon Nien, CEO and Board Member of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia, at the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ABIS) 2025, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). This summit coincided with the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.

President Ramaphosa highlighted South Africa's willingness to share its developmental experiences with ASEAN, particularly in enhancing the value addition to goods. He noted the significant advancements ASEAN countries have made in technology and infrastructure, areas where South Africa is keen to learn and collaborate.

He further pointed out the strategic importance of his visit to Malaysia, which offers a platform to engage with a broad network of business leaders. The goal is to attract these leaders to South Africa, fostering deeper economic ties.

The South African President expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the 47th ASEAN Summit at the invitation of Malaysia, underscoring the significance of continued participation in such regional dialogues.

President Ramaphosa's official visit to Malaysia began on October 24, following an invitation from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. His agenda included attending the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits as the Guest of the Chair, delivering remarks at the 20th East Asia Summit, and participating in a gala dinner hosted by Prime Minister Anwar and his wife.

In 2024, South Africa emerged as Malaysia's largest trading partner in Africa, with bilateral trade reaching RM7.82 billion (USD1.71 billion). Malaysia's exports to South Africa were valued at RM3.84 billion (USD840 million), while imports stood at RM3.98 billion (USD870 million).
