Putrajaya: The Special Task Force on Agency Reform (STAR) is set to hold a significant meeting this evening to discuss the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and its implications on worker productivity. The meeting will scrutinize studies conducted by the United Nations University in Tokyo, McKinsey, and insights from JP Morgan's experience.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN), Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, has announced that Datuk Dr Mohd Zabri Yusoff, the Director of the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN), has been appointed to present an initial report on the study conducted by the university. The findings will be deliberated upon during the meeting in Putrajaya, with a commitment to provide feedback to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim within two weeks.
Earlier, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the importance of recognizing the 'AI Productivity Paradox' as the government advances in its digital transformation efforts. The paradox refers to the discrepancy where substantial investments in AI and digitalization do not always yield increased productivity.
Citing research from the United Nations University, McKinsey, and JP Morgan, Anwar noted that only a small percentage, between three to seven percent, of AI adoption has shown a measurable impact on worker productivity or income. This raises concerns as the digital transformation and AI initiatives are primarily aimed at enhancing productivity and output.
Anwar has directed Shamsul Azri and other department heads to thoroughly examine the issue and provide preliminary recommendations to tackle the challenge posed by the 'AI Productivity Paradox'.
In addition to the meeting agenda, Shamsul Azri highlighted the ongoing Merdeka Month celebration, which is part of an initiative by the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) to instill patriotism among civil servants. He encouraged various units and departments to independently organize activities in honor of Merdeka Month.
