Strong Quake Strikes West Of Macquarie Island

Kuala lumpur: A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck west of Macquarie Island, Australia at 7.22 pm today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 61 kilometres and was detected 1,544 km south of Tasmania, Australia.

MetMalaysia confirmed, 'There is no tsunami threat to Malaysia,' alleviating concerns of any immediate danger to the region. The seismic activity in this remote area is closely monitored due to its location along major tectonic boundaries.

The tremor's impact on Macquarie Island and surrounding areas remains to be assessed, but initial reports suggest no significant damage or casualties. Emergency services in nearby regions are on alert as a precautionary measure.
