Sultan Nazrin Emphasizes Importance of Shura and Adab in Society

Kuala Lumpur:Sultan Nazrin Shah has highlighted the need to strengthen the culture of shura, or consultation, and adab, or civility, across various societal domains, including families, educational institutions, organizations, mosques, and the wider administration. This approach aims to manage differences of opinion with knowledge, patience, and respect.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sultan Nazrin, who chairs the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI), pointed out that shura enables diverse views to be heard, while adab ensures these differences are addressed respectfully and wisely. He explained that shura involves discussion and exchanging views to reach decisions that serve the common good, emphasizing listening with proper conduct and considering others' perspectives.

During the 75th MKI meeting, attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and other officials, Sultan Nazrin stressed the importance of Muslims upholding adab during consultations by speaking truthfully, respecting differing views, and considering the expertise of others. He stated that the spirit of shura requires acceptance of collective decisions made after fair assessment of all views.

Sultan Nazrin warned against allowing shura to become a platform for competing interests and emphasized that it should be free from slander and prejudice. He also highlighted a crisis of adab among Malays and Muslims, where discussions often devolve into disputes, and called for cultivating habits of listening and verifying information before sharing it.

He concluded by stating that freedom of speech should not equate to freedom to insult, urging society to uphold adab to maintain unity and respect. Sultan Nazrin expressed hope that MKI would exemplify an institution that embraces shura and adab, promoting knowledge, unity, and integrity in leadership.
