Kuala lumpur: Several improvements to the implementation of the targeted diesel subsidy system are being studied, with the government expected to announce them within the next one to two months, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the measures include simplifying the application process, relaxing the eligibility criteria for 'sambung bayar' (taking over hire-purchase payments) vehicles, and allowing quotas to be transferred to immediate family members. Amir Hamzah stated that these proposals are being carefully reviewed to enhance the subsidy system's effectiveness and accessibility.
Amir Hamzah emphasized that preparations for the 2027 Budget are focused on ensuring more effective and comprehensive delivery of assistance to the people under the targeted diesel subsidy. The approach aligns with the government's aim to ensure that every allocation has a tangible impact and helps ease the cost-of-living burden at the grassroots level.
He highlighted the importance of the 2027 Budget Tour series in examining improvements to the targeted diesel subsidy mechanism. The goal is to ensure that eligible individuals can benefit from the subsidy optimally. On the implementation of the targeted subsidy in Sabah, Amir Hamzah mentioned that approximately 120,000 pickup truck and jeep owners in the state have been identified as eligible for a diesel subsidy quota of more than 300 litres. However, only about 49,000 eligible vehicle owners have registered and submitted their applications so far.
Amir Hamzah encouraged more eligible owners in Sabah to apply immediately, as the facilities and application channels are readily available. To assist those less familiar with technology, the Ministry of Finance has collaborated with the Inland Revenue Board, Urban Transformation Centres, and oil companies to provide guidance on applications at counters and petrol stations.
