Teens Disciplined for Reckless Cycling With On-the-Spot Squats

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of 21 teenagers, aged between 14 and 17, were apprehended for reckless cycling during a roadblock on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. The incident, part of Operation New Year's Eve 2025, led to the teens being disciplined on the spot with a series of 'ketuk ketampi' (squats).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief, ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, reported that the teenagers were riding modified bicycles lacking essential safety features such as brakes, bells, and lights. The teens were also engaged in dangerous competitive behavior, violating the Road Traffic Rules (Rule 42) LN 165/59. This infraction could lead to the confiscation of their bicycles under Section 112 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

A senior JSPT officer, alongside a Road Transport Department (JPJ) officer, decided to issue a stern warning and opted for a disciplinary measure involving 'ketuk ketampi' to advocate and deter further reckless conduct. The teenagers then shook hands and apologized to the officers, receiving warnings against future misconduct and instructions to return home.

Mohd Zamzuri noted that a video of the incident had gained traction on social media, with many praising the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and JPJ for their approach. The decision to discipline the teenagers with 'ketuk ketampi' rather than legal action was viewed positively by netizens.

He emphasized that this method serves as a deterrent for the teenagers involved and helps raise awareness about road safety laws among young offenders. Mohd Zamzuri also urged young people to avoid reckless behavior on the roads to prevent injuries and fatalities.

He called on parents and guardians to play a proactive role in monitoring their children's activities to ensure compliance with the law.
