Kuala Lumpur: (KL) marks its 51st Federal Territory Day, the public is reminded to reflect on the capital’s progress and to continue working towards making the city a more inclusive, sustainable and liveable place for all.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Alliance for a Safe Community Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye emphasized that KL must not only be a hub of economic growth and development but also a city that prioritises the well-being of its people, the environment, and future generations. “A truly inclusive KL is one where every resident, regardless of age, background or ability, has equal access to opportunities and services,” he stated in a recent announcement.
Lee highlighted the importance of affordable housing and improved urban planning to prevent socio-economic segregation, alongside enhancing accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in public areas and transportation. He also advocated for multicultural harmony by fostering social cohesion through community-driven initiatives and policies that mirror KL’s diverse culture.
Further, he stressed the necessity of reinforcing the role of Kuala Lumpur City Hall in decision-making processes to ensure that residents’ voices are acknowledged and included in city planning. On sustainability, Lee underlined the need for expanding and maintaining green spaces like parks and urban forests to improve air quality and offer recreational areas for the community.
He urged for the enhancement of public transport to lessen congestion and carbon emissions, including better connectivity for first-mile and last-mile travel. Lee also called for stronger policies to reduce waste, encourage recycling, and transition towards a circular economy. He noted that strengthening climate resilience by addressing flash floods, preserving flood retention ponds, improving drainage systems, and promoting eco-friendly urban designs is crucial for the city’s sustainable future.
In terms of liveability, Lee asserted that improving the daily life of KL residents should be a primary focus, which includes alleviating traffic congestion via enhanced public transport and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. He outlined the importance of enhancing safety and security through improved street lighting, crime prevention programs, and community policing initiatives. Additionally, he highlighted the need to foster a vibrant cultural and creative economy, support local businesses, preserve heritage, and expand public arts projects.
Investing in safety, health, and wellness by ensuring superior public healthcare facilities, mental health support, and promoting active lifestyles was also identified as a crucial factor in achieving a more liveable KL.
