Kuala lumpur: United States President Donald Trump reaffirmed Washington's full commitment to Southeast Asia, pledging an enduring partnership under what he called the 'golden age of America'. Speaking at the 13th ASEAN-US Summit here, Trump said the US remains firmly dedicated to advancing a free, open and thriving Indo-Pacific, strengthening ties with ASEAN nations in trade, investment, and regional security.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Trump emphasized that his administration had restored America's strength and global standing, describing the present period as one of unmatched economic success and international engagement. He noted that the US and its partners in the Indo-Pacific are poised to create incredible prosperity for the nations on both sides of the Pacific Ocean and seize new opportunities for the people.
Trump expressed his pleasure at being in Southeast Asia, referring to it as home to some of America's most important allies, countries, and partners. He stated his intent to deepen ties of commerce, strengthen common security, and promote stability, prosperity, and peace for all the countries present and beyond. The US President also praised Malaysia for its leadership and hospitality under Anwar's administration, mentioning his visit to Malaysia as an opportunity to witness the country's progress and achievements.
Trump recalled the historic roots of America's ties with Asia, dating back to the early days of the republic when Americans voyaged across the Pacific to establish trade and diplomacy outposts. He highlighted progress on Indo-Pacific trade deals with Cambodia, Japan, and South Korea, and expressed delight in forging stronger partnerships in energy, technology, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and other industries.
During his remarks, Trump announced the signing of a new trade agreement with Malaysia and highlighted his role in brokering the peace deal between Cambodia and Thailand. He acknowledged Malaysia's pivotal role in mediating peace efforts, culminating in the signing of the KL Peace Accord. Trump stated that the peace deal represents one of eight conflicts resolved within the first eight months of his presidency, including the end of the war in Gaza.
Trump expressed gratitude to Malaysia and Brunei, as well as his friend President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia, for their support in securing a new era of peace in the Middle East. He declared that the Middle East will have peace after 3,000 years, characterizing it as a very strong and everlasting peace.
