Kuala lumpur: Two men were killed in a road crash after the SUV they were travelling in veered into the opposite lane, collided with another vehicle, and then crashed into a lamp post on Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis in Bukit Lanjut this morning.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Gua Musang district police chief Supt Sik Choon Foo reported that police received notification of the crash at 10.24 am. Initial investigations revealed that police officers were conducting routine checks at Kilometre 16 of Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis when they noticed a suspicious-looking Proton X70, which then turned back towards Gua Musang town.

'Police officers then followed the vehicle to carry out an inspection. Upon reaching the scene, the Proton X70 is believed to have lost control, crossed into the opposite lane, and collided with the rear side of a Toyota Hilux before veering off the road and crashing into a lamp post,' Sik explained in a statement today.

Sik said that one man died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Gua Musang Hospital. Their bodies were subsequently transferred to the hospital's forensic unit for post-mortem examinations.

Several other occupants of the Proton X70 sustained injuries and were taken to the same hospital for medical attention. The police officers and the Toyota Hilux driver were not harmed in the incident.

'Further investigations are underway to identify all those involved and establish the full circumstances of the incident,' Sik added. The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
