UMNO Veterans Back Urban Renewal Bill, Urge Caution Against Politicisation

Kuala lumpur: UMNO Veterans Club has expressed confidence in the government's intentions behind the tabling of the Urban Renewal Bill (PSB) 2025, describing it as an effort to improve the quality of life and well-being of the people. Its chairman, Datuk Othman Desa, stated that the group had no objections to the bill, emphasizing that it was proposed to ensure the public could enjoy more comfortable housing. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Othman highlighted the importance of considering suggestions for improvements to the legislation, particularly from the perspectives of geopolitics, asset ownership, and urban demographic balance. He stressed the need for careful scrutiny to prevent the bill from being exploited and politicised by the opposition, asserting confidence in the government's intentions. Earlier in the Dewan Rakyat, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim addressed a supplementary question from Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed (PN-Kuala Terengganu) on the bill. Anwar emphasized the necessity of the legislation to facilitate redevelopment projects that would provide more comfortable housing for the well-being of the people. He underscored the importance of public housing issues, especially amidst the country's encouraging economic growth, and criticized efforts to stir negative racial perceptions. Meanwhile, Othman called on the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Attorney-General's Chambers to expedite prosecution against those disrespecting the national flag by displaying the Jalur Gemilang improperly. He expressed concern over the trend of flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down or mocking the national symbol, urging respect for this emblem of sovereignty, particularly with the upcoming 68th National Day. Othman also warned against using the flag issue to provoke racial or religious sentiments, advocating for firm and immediate action to curb such negativity and restore public confidence in the rule of law.
