Universiti putra malaysia: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is helping to strengthen the national food security agenda through the use of modern technology and the involvement of the younger generation to enhance agricultural productivity and the quality of produce.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, UPM Vice-Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah emphasized the country's reliance on imported food and global geopolitical uncertainties, highlighting the necessity of developing domestic capabilities in food production to ensure a stable supply. He noted that the integration of technology in agriculture is a primary strategy for the university to increase output, expedite production processes, and reduce operating costs.
"We know that the profile of farmers in Malaysia largely consists of the older generation. Therefore, one of our strategies is to leverage technology through the younger workforce, with the hope that UPM graduates can transform the profile of farmers in Malaysia," Dr Ahmad Farhan stated. He added that without technology, it would be challenging to reduce costs or improve yields and quality, underscoring the importance of these strategies.
The remarks were made during a media event held by UPM, which was also attended by Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin. Dr Ahmad Farhan further explained that UPM consistently collaborates with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to tackle issues and boost local food production as a means of reducing dependence on imports.
UPM is also committed to providing training opportunities for farmers, aimed at enhancing their skills and capacity by sharing expertise and applying new technologies in agriculture. This initiative is part of UPM's strategic agenda to help the nation confront economic challenges and ensure food security for the well-being of its citizens.
