Kuala Lumpur: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has established two special committees following the recent accident involving two buses on its campus in Sintok, which claimed the life of a student last Saturday. UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan announced the formation of these committees to investigate the incident and reevaluate the safety standards of the campus bus services.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Accident Investigation Committee has been tasked with conducting a detailed investigation into the cause of the incident, ensuring that all safety and standard operating procedures are strictly followed. Meanwhile, the campus shuttle bus service integrity assessment committee will focus on reassessing the efficiency, regulatory compliance, integrity, and effectiveness of transportation management on campus.
In the accident, Manarina Hasya Muhamad Karim, a 22-year-old student in her fourth semester pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Marketing, tragically lost her life. The incident occurred at 6.30 pm at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar on April 19. A stationary bus picking up passengers was rear-ended by another bus, causing it to lurch forward and pin Manarina, who was waiting in line to board, against a road barrier.
Mohd Foad expressed UUM's deep sorrow and extended condolences to the family of the deceased. He emphasized that the loss of Manarina was a significant blow not only to her family but also to the university and the nation. UUM has provided assistance to the family for funeral arrangements and has offered support through insurance compensation, bereavement and welfare aid, as well as counseling services for those affected by the tragedy.
He also mentioned that the police are currently investigating the incident. The victim, originally from Johor, was confirmed dead after receiving nearly 10 hours of medical treatment at the hospital.
