Paris: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a bold remark called for the need to redefine the terms of engagement between Southeast Asia and Europe, as equals, as co-creators, and as partners in both ties and trade, in a world yearning for balance.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar acknowledged the significant progress made by France and Europe in areas such as culture, renewable energy, biodiversity initiatives, political philosophy, and governance, while highlighting Southeast Asia’s own achievements. He emphasized that the growth trajectory of ASEAN reflects the success of ASEAN economic integration, showcasing intra-regional trade and investment, economic resilience, and competitiveness among member countries.
Anwar further commended ASEAN’s focus on regional diplomacy and cooperation, which has contributed to addressing inter-state tensions, managing conflicts, and promoting collective decision-making in regional crises, despite the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. In contrast, he noted that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has challenged Europe’s security assumptions and highlighted the continent’s ongoing struggle with military spending and transatlantic alliances.
He stated that the European project, initially aimed at preventing war through integration, now faces challenges in reimagining its defense, technological sovereignty, and energy security. Anwar expressed that Southeast Asia welcomes Europe’s engagement and deepening ties with ASEAN, but stressed that these partnerships must be based on mutual respect and equality.
Addressing trade, Anwar emphasized that economic engagement should serve as a bridge rather than a barrier. He urged for partnerships based on respect, flexibility, and restraint, and called for open discussions about regulatory impacts on Southeast Asia. Anwar made it clear that Southeast Asia seeks fairness and equity, rather than favours or exemptions, and rejects condescending attitudes, geopolitical containment strategies, and the imposition of external fears onto the region.
