W. Visayas Local Government Units Urged to Prepare for La Ni±a

Iloilo city: Local government units (LGUs) in Western Visayas are encouraged to prepare for the La Ni±a phenomenon. The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) passed Resolution No. 01 during its third quarter full council meeting, enjoining all provincial and highly urbanized city local government units to 'intensify monitoring and strengthen existing preparedness measures in view of the onset of the La Ni±a phenomenon.'

According to Philippines News Agency, the LGUs are likewise urged to submit their respective action plans. The resolution highlights the potential impacts of La Ni±a on agriculture, infrastructure, health, and public safety, particularly in low-lying and landslide-prone communities. It stresses the importance of proactive and preemptive actions to mitigate these impacts through enhanced local preparedness measures, activation of early warning systems, and intensified community monitoring and coordination.

LGUs are also advised to conduct an immediate review and update their contingency measures, ensure readiness of evacuation centers, conduct pre-disaster risk assessments, intensify risk communication and public information, and coordinate regularly with relevant agencies for technical guidance and situational updates.

During the meeting, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration weather forecaster Jan Hermo Baron stated that climate models suggest a 70 percent chance of La Ni±a forming from October to December, with chances decreasing to around 54 percent until February 2026. Despite forecasts indicating a weak La Ni±a, RDRRMC chair Raul Fernandez emphasized the need for LGUs to prepare, as floods can still occur with just the southwest monsoon.
