Youth Call for Job Market Alignment and AI Skills in Budget 2027

Kuala Lumpur:Young people are urging that Budget 2027 goes beyond mere financial allocations by implementing concrete measures to address job mismatches and enhance youth economic mobility. Zairin Adam Abdul Aziz, National Commissioner of the Scouts Association of Malaysia, emphasized the growing gap between graduates' skills and the current job market demands amid the evolving landscape shaped by digital technology and artificial intelligence.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, He highlighted that the misalignment of skills and underemployment among young people in Malaysia are reaching concerning levels. Zairin stressed the importance of economic mobility for youth, which necessitates clear policy directions from both government and community to ensure graduates' qualifications meet industry needs.

Shameera Nasreen Ahamed Noordeen, deputy chairman of the Malaysian Indian Youth Council Women's Commission, shared similar concerns. She pointed out that the rising cost of living and competitive labor market often compel young people to take jobs out of necessity rather than choice. She also pointed out the pressing need for affordable housing and controlled rental rates in economically significant areas like Penang.

Addressing the AI boom, Shameera Nasreen suggested that the technology presents new career opportunities, such as roles for prompt engineers, if youths can master it. She recommended that the government bolster strategic partnerships with industry players to support upskilling and reskilling initiatives, as these entities are usually quicker to adapt to technological advancements.

Both Zairin and Shameera Nasreen are recognized as the 2026 National Level National Premier Youth Award (APBN) champions in the male and female categories, respectively.
