Kuala lumpur: Nomination day for the Youth Parliament Election has been set for August 8, announced Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul. This timing will enable those elected to participate in the Dewan Rakyat sitting scheduled to resume in October.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the initiative aims to provide early exposure to the younger generation regarding the institution of Parliament. Tan Sri Johari Abdul emphasized, "This is an effort to strengthen the country's future by giving young people the opportunity to understand the functions and role of Parliament from an early stage," during an engagement session with staff of the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI).
Currently, 12 parties, predominantly involving university students, have registered for the upcoming election. Johari noted that party registration is still open to youths aged between 18 and 30 who are not university students, allowing them the opportunity to establish their own parties.
Furthermore, Johari clarified that Youth Parliament voters would not be automatically registered. Instead, eligible voters must sign up through designated channels, with a target of 300,000 individuals expected to participate in the voting process. To boost participation, Johari's office plans to promote the election extensively through social media, and he himself will tour the country to engage directly with young people.
During the engagement session, Johari also highlighted the importance of today's program in providing local residents with a comprehensive understanding of the Youth Parliament's role. This initiative seeks to cultivate a generation of youths well-versed in democracy and leadership principles.
