Abdul El-Sayed’s Senate Win Highlights Shift Toward Inclusive Politics

Kuala Lumpur:Abdul El-Sayed's victory in the Michigan United States (US) Senate election marks a significant milestone not only for Muslim representation but also for a broader shift towards inclusive leadership in global politics. This perspective was shared by Dr. Maszlee Malik of the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Maszlee emphasized that El-Sayed's triumph over Republican candidate Mike Rogers, as projected on November 4, underscores the potential for minority candidates to gain trust in a diverse society despite facing faith-targeted political rhetoric. This victory is seen as more than a win for Muslims; it represents a larger political lesson on inclusivity.

Dr. Maszlee noted that El-Sayed's campaign focused on universal healthcare, election funding reform, and criticism of US policies toward Israel, blending domestic issues with international ethical considerations. He highlighted the importance of using identity to promote collective responsibility rather than fostering division.

The win also provides insights into the evolving political dynamics among younger generations, linking economic concerns with demands for dignity and justice. Although a clear Gen Z voting trend is not yet evident, the shift is noteworthy.

In a multipolar world, Dr. Maszlee pointed out, changes in the international order are driven not only by major powers like Washington and Beijing but also by internal debates, civil society movements, and electoral pressures. He remarked that a senator with diverse views can broaden discussions on issues like Palestine, though a single senator cannot overhaul US foreign policy.

For Malaysia, Dr. Maszlee identified lessons from El-Sayed's success, including connecting political values with solutions, engaging youth, advocating for welfare, and rejecting an arrogant political culture. He advised that while Malaysia cannot directly replicate Michigan's experience due to different historical and societal contexts, it can learn that one's background does not confine their influence.

Looking ahead, Dr. Maszlee stressed that the true measure of political success lies in fostering a better life within a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society. The challenge for El-Sayed will be to transform the trust placed in him into effective service, policy, and moral leadership.
