Agrobank Launches Sorghum Project to Enhance Agrifood Talent Development

Chenor:Agrobank is enhancing its talent development initiatives in the agrifood sector through the Sustainable Sorghum Cultivation Project. This project provides practical experience to students from Chenor Vocational College (Agriculture) by allocating a one-acre plot as a pilot site for cultivation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, The site is designed to accommodate between 20,000 and 25,000 sorghum plants, contingent on planting density. Zulkernai Fauzi, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Division Director, emphasized the importance of diversifying food sources, highlighting sorghum's potential as an alternative to rice for products like bread and biscuits.

Zulkernai also noted the project's potential to foster entrepreneurship among students and create employment opportunities within the local community. He described agriculture as a promising field for entrepreneurship due to its growth potential.

Agrobank's President and CEO, Datuk Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin, stated that the agrifood sector's development requires financing and a new generation equipped with the necessary skills and entrepreneurial mindset. The project aims to broaden young people's perspectives on modern agriculture, emphasizing opportunities for innovation and technology.

Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah pointed out that sorghum is a resource-efficient crop suitable for arid conditions, making it a promising alternative for food and commercial use. Students will learn about sorghum's potential as a grain and food ingredient to support food security and develop prototypes for sorghum-based products.

The initiative aligns with the National Agrifood Policy 2021-2030 (DAN 2.0), aiming to build a sustainable, resilient, and technology-driven agrifood sector. Agrobank and its partners will evaluate the project's success based on student progress and project outcomes.
