Kuala Lumpur: The Alliance for a Safe Community has issued a call to action for all motorists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians to prioritize safety to prevent accidents and ensure a safe journey home during the festive Aidilfitri season. Its chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, highlighted the expected increase in road users, with over two million individuals anticipated to travel across the nation to celebrate with family and friends.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Lee expressed concerns over the significant rise in road traffic during the festive period, which poses safety challenges. He emphasized the need for road users to take necessary precautions, such as planning their journeys to avoid peak travel times to mitigate congestion and fatigue.
Lee advised road users to ensure their vehicles are in good condition by checking tyres, brakes, lights, and fluids before setting out. He also stressed the importance of using seat belts and securing children in appropriate child restraints.
As a member of the Road Safety Council, Lee underscored the importance of staying alert on the road, avoiding distractions like mobile phone usage while driving, and taking breaks every two hours to prevent fatigue. He cautioned against speeding, sudden lane changes, and tailgating, as these are major causes of accidents.
Lee reminded road users of the necessity to comply with traffic laws, observe speed limits and road signs, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He highlighted that motorcyclists should wear helmets and high-visibility clothing to enhance safety.
With heavy traffic expected during the festive season, Lee called for patience and courtesy among motorists. He urged them to remain calm, avoid aggressive driving, give way to emergency vehicles, and respect other road users. He also emphasized the importance of being cautious around pedestrians, especially children and the elderly, and advised drivers to be extra vigilant in residential areas and near Hari Raya festivities.
Lee concluded by advocating for road safety as a shared responsibility, warning that a moment of carelessness can result in lasting regret. He wished everyone a safe journey and a joyful Hari Raya with their loved ones.
