Anwar Calls for Peaceful Solutions Between Pakistan-India and Thai-Cambodian Border Dispute

Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed hope for Pakistan and India to find a peaceful and comprehensive solution to their longstanding issues, aiming to ensure regional stability and peace.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar shared this sentiment on Facebook, noting that he conveyed the message to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a phone call while Shehbaz was on his hajj pilgrimage. Anwar also extended Eid Mubarak wishes to Pakistanis and expressed hope that Shehbaz's official visit to Malaysia could be rescheduled when circumstances in Pakistan allow.

Anwar emphasized Malaysia's eagerness to continue strengthening its strategic and mutually beneficial relationships with Pakistan. He also acknowledged Shehbaz's compliments on Malaysia's role in hosting the recent ASEAN Summit.

In addition, Anwar reached out to Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, appreciating their efforts to address their border dispute through negotiations and diplomacy. He urged both nations to maintain restraint, reduce tensions, and work towards a peaceful resolution.

Anwar reiterated Malaysia's appreciation for its relations with both countries and, as the ASEAN Chairman, expressed confidence in ASEAN's principles of peaceful resolution serving as a foundation for addressing disputes.

The recent skirmish on May 28 between Thai and Cambodian military forces in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani and Cambodia's Preah Vihear provinces resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Following this, Cambodia announced its intention to bring the dispute to the International Court of Justice. Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully, adhering to international law and existing agreements.
