Assault On Disabled Man Uncalled For, Bring Case To Justice: Fahmi

Chukai: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today described the viral beating of a disabled man at a farmers' market in Chukai, Terengganu, as inappropriate and should not have happened. Fahmi said he was informed that the individuals involved in the case had been detained by the police. 'I leave it to the authorities to bring the case to justice,' he told a press conference after breakfast with members of the Kelantan Media Club, here today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi expressed concern over the incident, which gained widespread attention after a video of the assault went viral on social media. The video, lasting 1 minute and 52 seconds, depicted the 47-year-old man being beaten and dragged by several individuals at the market following an alleged crash into one of the stalls on his motorcycle.

Fahmi highlighted a comment circulating on social media, emphasizing that 'justice or punishment cannot be privatised.' He remarked, 'I was deeply moved by that. No matter what happens, we cannot take the law into our hands.' This statement underscores the importance of allowing legal authorities to handle such matters.

In addition to addressing the incident, Fahmi advised the public to exercise caution with information consumed on social media and platforms like WhatsApp. He warned against the spread of false information or content lacking context, which can lead to misleading perceptions. Fahmi stressed the need for vigilance as communities in the country often use WhatsApp Group Chat to disseminate various messages.
