BAM Plans Coaching Restructure After 2026 Asian Games: Chong Wei

Kuala lumpur: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is set to overhaul its coaching line-up following the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games. This decision comes amidst several recent changes within the governing body's coaching framework.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, BAM Performance Committee chairman Datuk Seri Dr Lee Chong Wei emphasized that the restructuring plan is currently under discussion. Any proposal will need further refinement in collaboration with his committee, the coaching staff, and the BAM Council. Chong Wei highlighted the necessity for dialogue with key individuals such as Rexy Mainaky and Kenneth Jonassen before any concrete steps are taken.

Chong Wei, speaking to reporters at the unveiling of the Lee Chong Wei Cup (LCWC) 2026 badminton tournament trophy, mentioned that BAM is also focusing on junior players aged 13 and 15 who are expected to join the national squad next year. The search for suitable coaches to integrate into BAM is underway.

The Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games are scheduled to be held from September 19 to October 4. Chong Wei also addressed the vacancy left by former national mixed doubles head coach Nova Widianto, who concluded his service with BAM on July 31. Additionally, the association is assessing the roles of existing coaching staff, including the anticipated arrival of former national coach Teo Kok Siang, set to commence duties on September 1.

Chong Wei further reported that a recent meeting with all coaches highlighted the importance of monitoring player discipline and resolving issues collaboratively. Any changes to the coaching structure will not only focus on player performance but also aim to enhance the overall coaching system and discipline within the national squad.

He stressed that restructuring is a gradual process designed to restore discipline and optimize conditions within BAM. Chong Wei underscored the critical role of coaches, stating their necessity in managing the players alongside him.

According to Chong Wei, the BAM Performance Committee is slated to convene this Friday to deliberate on the coaching structure before advancing any proposals for further consideration.
