BUDI95 Adjustment Announced to Preserve Economic Resilience Amid Middle East Tensions

Kuala lumpur: The temporary adjustment of the Budi MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) Programme, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has been described as a necessary measure to ensure Malaysia's economic resilience in light of the uncertain situation in the Middle East, which has influenced global markets.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Selangor PKR information chief Saifuddin Shafi Muhammad welcomed the move, emphasizing its importance in preventing a broader economic spillover that could hinder the nation's growth momentum. The decision to maintain the BUDI95 subsidy at RM1.99 per litre reflects the government's commitment to shielding citizens from adverse economic impacts, though it necessitates an adjustment to a consumption level of 200 litres per month beginning April 1. This measure aims to secure an adequate oil supply for future use, contingent on resolving international conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Saifuddin Shafi also expressed gratitude for efforts to enhance border surveillance against fuel smuggling and for proactive steps to curb subsidy abuse at local petrol stations. He urged cooperation across administrative and community levels to thwart those exploiting the subsidy system for profit.

In his statement, Saifuddin Shafi supported the phased activation of work-from-home policies to maintain public service quality, while noting that the health, education, and security sectors would not be included in this proposal. He encouraged the private sector to support this government initiative.

Furthermore, Saifuddin Shafi called on Selangor residents to remain vigilant amidst the evolving situation and urged local leaders, especially political appointees, to effectively communicate government efforts to the populace. He expressed confidence in the leadership of Anwar at the federal level, alongside Selangor's Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, to prioritize policies that ensure public welfare.

In a special message, Anwar expressed hope that citizens would understand the rationale behind the temporary adjustment of BUDI95 eligibility from 300 litres to 200 litres per month, commencing April 1. He explained that the decision was made with careful consideration of the global economic pressures resulting from ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts. Anwar, also serving as Finance Minister, noted that the coordination measures are temporary until global market stability is restored, though he acknowledged the current absence of recovery signs.
