Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and Sepang International Circuit (SIC) have pledged to deliver a world-class experience for the 2026 Formula 1 (F1) Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, which is set to occur from October 2 to 4. Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari announced that the event will adhere to the highest F1 standards.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, detailed discussions involving the Malaysian Government, the Bahrain Government, and F1 were conducted after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and KBS received early notification about hosting the race at SIC. The event, which will replace the Bahrain GP, is anticipated to boost Malaysia's motorsport ecosystem and development. It is also expected to enhance Malaysia's reputation as a premier destination for international sporting events and stimulate economic growth through sports tourism.
Dr. Mohammed Taufiq expressed support for the official announcement by Formula 1 regarding the event's relocation to SIC. He extended appreciation to His Majesty the King of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim, and conveyed gratitude to the King of Bahrain, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, for the trust and close ties between the two nations. The minister also highlighted the significant role of the close relationship between the Prime Minister and Bahrain Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Salman Hamad Al Khalifa in realizing this hosting opportunity.
The agreement reached is seen as a reflection of the strong friendship between Malaysia and Bahrain. It further cements Malaysia's position as a hub for hosting international sporting events. Dr. Mohammed Taufiq noted SIC's impressive track record as a Formula 1 host for 19 years, from 1999 to 2017, which will satisfy motorsport fans eager for F1 action.
Earlier, F1 issued a statement confirming Malaysia as the host for the F1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at SIC. This marks the first instance in F1 history where a race has been relocated due to its cancellation. The event is subject to final agreement and official approvals, including from the World Motor Sport Council, and will remain named the F1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
An agreement among F1, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and the Malaysian and Bahrain governments permits the race to proceed after its initial cancellation due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The Bahrain GP was initially scheduled to take place at the Bahrain International Circuit but was cancelled due to the geopolitical conflict. SIC, which hosted the Malaysian GP from 1999 to 2017, was previously removed from the F1 calendar due to rising hosting costs and licensing fees.
